Magnetic Viewing Paper Weird stuff... EMG's Magnetic Viewing Paper consists of microscopic particles of iron suspended in oil. This mix is laminated in transparent plastic. Now, you're probably thinking, "Great. Can I leave now?" Well, don't go too quickly, because it IS great. Lay the viewing paper on top of a pickup, and the iron particles will align along the pattern of the magnetic field creating a visual display of the magnetic lines of force. You'll see black spots in the areas of greatest magnetic effect and white lines along the areas of no magnetic force. If your outer strings are not over the pickup's magnets, they will have lower output and lead to unbalanced sound. Magnetic Viewing Paper is espcially useful for bass players. Since all the Extended Series pickups look the same, you can tell them apart easily without having to look at the label on the back. It's a great tool for verifying that the pickup's magnetic structure is wide enough for basses (or guitars) with custom string spacing as well.
